Matfen Estates is a traditional agricultural estate surrounding the estate village of Matfen. Matfen Home Farms is a family business partnership operated by Sir Hugh Blackett, Lady Blackett and their son Henry Blackett.
Based from the Matfen Estate Office, Matfen Home Farms Partnership brings together trading activities across the Matfen Estate including farming, forestry, holiday cottages and residential property lettings.
The estate comprises a mixed portfolio of let residential properties, many in Matfen Village, a small number of commercial lets, 8 tenanted farming businesses, and commercial and amenity woodland. It manages a number of listed buildings, maintains and looks after many miles of traditional dry stone walling, and hosts considerable lengths of Hadrian’s Wall – a World Heritage Site.

Our woodlands supply roundwood timber, which gets processed into chip for the boilers which are utlised extensively across the Estate.

Matfen Estate is rich in history and includes Halton Castle, a 14th Century Pele Tower, whose gardens are opened to the public by Sir Hugh and Lady Blackett once every year.

We have a small team on the Estate with a range of roles both part and full time, and also give livelihood to contractors, cleaners, dry stone wallers, fencers, and many more local businesses.
